The Dog and The Nail

One fine autumn day, a hiker was out for a walk in the woods. As he walked out of the forest and into a clearing, he noticed a cabin up ahead. As he approached the small house, he could hear an animal howling and yelping as if it was in pain. As he got closer to the cabin, he could see an old man sitting in a rocking chair on the front porch. The pain howls he was hearing appeared to be coming from a dog that was lying on the porch beside the old man’s chair.

When he reached the cabin, the hiker asked, “Excuse me sir, but what’s wrong with your dog?”

The old man replied, “Oh, him, he’s laying on a nail sticking out of the porch.”

The hiker look astonished. “Well, why doesn’t he just get up and move off of the nail? It must really be hurting him!”

The old man appeared to agree with the hiker as he turned his head and looked down at the dog. Then he said, “I guess the nail’s just not deep enough yet.”
